MIDI and Gamepad Controls

Browse External Control
  1. MIDI and Gamepad Controls
  2. Control a Visu from your iPhone

Use a MIDI controller or a gamepad to change a visu while it is running. There is no separate screen for adding a device: Visu.Haus detects what is available when you start binding a parameter.

Connect and map a MIDI controller#

MIDI binding on the website requires Chrome on a desktop computer.

  1. Connect and turn on your MIDI controller.
  2. Open the visu in the Editor in Chrome.
  3. In the controls panel, find the parameter you want to control.
  4. Right-click the parameter and choose Bind external control.
  5. If Chrome asks for MIDI access, select Allow.
  6. In the card that opens, check that the MIDI counter shows 1 or more.
  7. Move the exact knob or fader you want to use, press a pad or key, or move the pitch bend.
  8. The card closes as soon as it receives a valid input. Move the same physical control again to test the result.

What the binding card shows#

The card is a listening state, not a list of devices. It shows:

  • Waiting for input: Move or press to bind while it listens.
  • Last input: Waiting until an input is received.
  • A MIDI icon with the number of MIDI devices detected.
  • A Gamepad icon with the number of gamepads detected.
  • A close button to cancel the binding.
  • A warning when permission, detection, or a previous mapping blocks the input.

A green number above an icon means at least one device is available. A red 0 means that device type has not been detected. After you move an input, its device and input name appear under Last input, for example a MIDI channel and control number.

Check the result#

A small indicator appears beside the visu parameter after the binding succeeds. Green means the device is connected. Amber means the mapping exists but the device is no longer available. If a number appears inside the indicator, that parameter has more than one mapping.

Use the type of physical input that matches the job:

  • Use a knob, fader, or trigger for values such as speed, scale, density, rotation, or intensity.
  • Use a pad or button for a toggle or an action such as Reset, Shuffle, or Pause.
  • Use a stick for a value that should keep changing while you hold a direction.

Numbers, sliders, toggles, action buttons, and menus can be mapped. For a color, bind Hue, Saturation, and Brightness separately. Text and media fields are not available for this type of mapping.

Gamepad#

Gamepad uses the same binding card and the same parameter menu as MIDI.

  1. Connect the gamepad by cable or pair it with your computer.
  2. Press any button once so the browser can recognize it.
  3. Open the visu in the Editor and keep the page focused.
  4. Right-click the parameter you want to control and choose Bind external control.
  5. Check that the Gamepad counter shows 1 or more.
  6. Press the intended button, squeeze a trigger, or move the intended stick direction.
  7. When the card closes, use the same input again to test the mapping.

Buttons work well for actions and toggles. Triggers work well for gradual values. Each horizontal or vertical stick direction can become an input, and Visu.Haus automatically ignores small movements around the center of the stick.

Change or remove a mapping#

  1. Right-click the mapped parameter.
  2. Choose Rebind external control to listen for a different input.
  3. Choose Disconnect external control to remove the mapping.

For a color, the menu shows separate options for Hue, Saturation, and Brightness.

If the card says that an input is already bound, move a different input or disconnect its previous mapping first. If a counter remains at 0, confirm that the device is available to the computer, reconnect it, and open the binding card again. For MIDI, also check Chrome's MIDI permission. For a gamepad, refocus the page and press a button once.
